Founded in 1688, in New Rochelle is a town that manages to be at once old and established but young and vibrant. Shopping and Dining

Downtown New Rochelle is a classic “Main Street” experience. It’s known for its family-owned-and-run businesses where shoppers can find all kinds of goods, from clothing to jewelry, home furnishings, sports gear, toys, music, office supplies and ethnic crafts and specialties. Need a supermarket with one-stop food shopping? It’s here. But you’ll also find specialty food stores, wine shops and green grocers. To top it off, from June through November, the City-sponsored Farmers Market is a treasure trove of farm-fresh produce, dairy goods, baked foods, preserves, condiments, wine and more.

Popular shopping areas include North Ridge Shopping Center, and Quaker Ridge Shopping Center.

A notable entertainment venue in New Rochelle’s real estate is the New Roc City complex. Opened in the summer of 1999 as the centerpiece of the efforts to revitalize the downtown area of New Rochelle, New Roc features a 19-screen movie theater, an IMAX theater (the first in Westchester County), a health club, restaurants, shopping centers and an indoor amusement park.

New Rochelle’s restaurants offer something for every palate. Some of the best include several Italian eateries: Agostino's Italian Ristorante, Da Giorgio, Sienna, and Spadaro. Other highly rated dining spots include:

  • Cienaga - Latin
  • Cholo's Kitchen - Mexican
  • Little Mexican Cafe
  • Alvin & Friends - Caribbean
  • Coromandel - Indian
  • Gnarly Vine - wine bar & restaurant

Parks and Recreation

New Rochelle manages 270 acres park land which includes 38 recreational facilities with parks, lakes, nature areas, playgrounds, hiking trails and a municipal marina. Residents can enjoy five waterfront parks and five lakes with beaches, pavilions, gardens, trails, recreational facilities, and a bird sanctuary. There are also five parks with playing fields, two with athletic stadiums, and one with an outdoor pool, pavilion and picnic rentals. For exercise and tranquility, there are two natural areas, including 67 acres of trails and open space. Scattered throughout New Rochelle’s real estate are six small parks and eight neighborhood play parks. In addition, Westchester County provides over 16,000 acres of park lands, with over 100 acres located in New Rochelle, including Glen Island Park and the Nature Study Woods.

One of New Rochelle’s great attractions is its long waterfront. New Rochelle’s Municipal Marina is the closest affordable dockage to New York City.

Living

Living in New Rochelle brings the opportunity to live in a vibrant city which, as we’ve seen, has a classic downtown, a mosaic of neighborhoods with distinct character, and a waterfront of remarkable beauty and excellent public accessibility. The waterfront not only offers beautiful vistas in every season, it is home to several popular beach clubs, four parks (three City and one county) and terrific recreational opportunities. On the city’s East End, the 20-acre Echo Bay area now being planned is expected to be a dynamic new waterfront development offering residences, stores, eateries, a boardwalk and open space.

The median home price in New Rochelle is $573,500 (as of 2012) but homes are available in a wide range of prices and configurations. From centuries-old classic homes and waterfront homes to newer construction and (much newer) condo towers and lofts, New Rochelle real estate has it all.

Schools, Health, Transportation

New Rochelle’s public schools are highly regarded and have won various awards. The district’s schools serve almost 11,000 students. Notably, New Rochelle High School is home to the Museum of Arts and Culture, the only Regents-chartered museum hosted in a school in New York. The city also offers excellent private and parochial schools and three universities call the city home, The College of New Rochelle, Iona College, and Monroe College.

The Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester, found in the City’s center, is Westchester County’s largest private teaching hospital with 465 beds, more than 600 doctors and close to 1000 health care professionals.

The Community School is available for students in grades 7th - 12th who perform better in a smaller, differently structured environment.

White Plains has two fine hospitals. In July of 2012, White Plains Hospital was named one of New York’s top hospitals by U.S. News. It offers a full range of medical treatments including emergency services. New York-Presbyterian/Westchester Hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

New Rochelle offers good access to highways and to three major New York area airports (La Guardia, JFK International and Newark Liberty) and to the increasingly desirable Westchester County Airport. For commuters, the New Rochelle train station houses the Metro-North railroad line and the regional Amtrak line which provide access to Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. The express train to Grand Central takes about 30 minutes. New Rochelle’s Transit Center accommodates local buses.
